Cristiano Ronaldo Is Modest
By: Ale | April 24th, 2008
From an interview following yesterdays Champions League tie:
on the missed spot kick:
‘I’ve scored a few penalties in that side but I didn’t score - no problem. Now I’m going to score in Manchester,‘
when asked about Rafa Marquez’ tackle in the box:
‘I think he touched me… but the referee didn’t give a penalty. I don’t know why, I don’t understand.‘
I always hate when anyone makes a sports-related prediction, but this is just more than a bit arrogant on his part. It’s like he wants people to dislike him. I’m hoping he makes good on his ‘promise,’ because if he doesn’t… oh man.
The part of the interview that really annoyed me though was the ‘I think he touched me‘ bit. What do you mean you ‘think‘ he touched you? If you’re going to look to the heavens and wave your arms around at least claim there was contact. Maybe Marquez just kind of blew on him or something. Maybe it was lasers. I don’t know.
This is just new ammunition for his critics though considering it involves the two aspects of his ‘game’ that cause people to dislike him: arrogance, and diving. It’s also a bit of a knock for him (whether he scores Tuesday or not) because these negative characteristics, while still prominent, have been decreasing year by year.
Not much else to say about this… more later.
Ciao.

give him a break!…You should remember that English is not his first language…ask the same thing in Portuguese and he will tell you that Marquez did touch him and yadda yadda..anyways it definitely is arrogant of him to predict that he will score in the return leg..damn Cristiano…more fodder for ur critics!

Ronaldo had an appeal for a second penalty turned away when he went to ground under a challenge from Rafael Marquez.
He said: “I think he touched me. But the referee didn’t give a penalty. I don’t know why, I don’t understand.”
Ferguson added: “If you get one penalty in the Nou Camp you are doing well, to ask for two I’m not surprised it wasn’t given.”

Bout “I will score”, I think it’s fairly obvious he was trying to keep his head up and as you can all judge, his english is not really good (although I bet it’s better than the portuguese of most people around).
When he says “The ref didn’t give, I don’t understand”, I honestly believe he meant “I didn’t understand”.

Yes Pedro, about that statement, I agree..
I hate the player, no offence everyone, but I’m not convinced that it’s arrogance when he says ‘Now I’m going to score in Manchester.’ So basically, you’re gonna hold that statement against him if he doesn’t.. But what if he said,
‘Now I hope I score in Manchester.’ Will you still criticize him then?Posted from

Saying he ‘will score’ in the next game seems like a pretty big claim to me, while saying he ‘hopes to’ would’ve been alot better, and put much less pressure on him.
We’ll see!

Well, maybe it’s good he said it, now he’ll probably work even harder to score.
Yes, it was arrogant for him to say it, but I think it was his way of justifying his miss towards everyone else.

lilian, i think you are being too kind on ronaldo.
theres no way he can justify his penalty miss.
if barcelona end up going through to the final, ronaldo will forever remain in football folklore as a big game choker.

Shehan, yes that was kind of my point :)… Since there is no way he can justify it, he’s trying to make it all sound better, trying to reassure people he’ll fix it.
Fact is, if he does score at OT, his mental strenght will be all over newspapers the morning after and the missed penalty will mean nothing.
If he doesn’t and Barcelona wins… well, you’ve said it all yourself
